Directed by Sophie Barthes
In the midst of an existential crisis, a famous American actor (Paul Giamatti) stumbles upon a Soul Storage, a private lab offering New Yorkers a relief from the burden of their souls.
Paul decides to get his soul extracted, only to discover that it has the shape and size of a chickpea. After a failed attempt to live and act without his soul, he rents an alleged Russian poet’s soul, which guides him into a strange dreamlike world. Things take an unexpected turn when he decides to get his soul back and meets Nina, a Russian soul mule, who illicitly transports souls from Russia to America.

Critics in Brief

"Barthes gives the characters more chances to ask questions than to answer them. The movie turns epistemological without championing one spiritual outlook above all others."
- Eric Kohn, IndieWire
"Cold Souls is a beautifully shot film, and it also becomes more than a little bit moving, as Giamatti struggles with a question we've all asked ourselves: Is it possible to remove the burden of our soul without taking away the benefit of it? Is it the very weight we struggle under that makes us strong?"
- James Rocchi, Cinematical
